Causeway Bay is the epitome of urban reincarnation. No other area in Hong Kong has so successfully and radically reinvented itself as this prime shopping district. In the early days, it was called East Point and was Hong Kong’s version of the docklands filled with factories, depots and warehouses. In the 1920’s the area transformed into a popular entertainment cluster with restaurants, theatres and the Lee Gardens amusement park high up on East Point Hill. After the war the hill was flattened, but the spirit of joy never left. Today many of the old cinema’s, movie theatres, night markets and Japanese departments stores may have been replaced with commercial malls and hotels, but Causeway Bay will always be Hong Kong’s heart for fun and leisure.
