Abdullah bin Abdul Kadir is regarded by many as the Father of Modern Malay Literature. Abdullah brought realism into Malay literature, using lively Malay with idioms and proverbs. Instead of fables and legends, he wrote of actual events, describing rulers, Chinese triads activities and ordinary people, and is therefore also considered to be the first modern Malay journalist. He was a scribe, translator and Malay language tutor to missionaries, administrators and businessmen. He was also a cultural interface, revealing the world of Malay traditions and culture to foreigners and innovations such as steamships to his own people. Just as important, it was primarily through Abdullah that the technology of lithographic printing was introduced to Malay society. For this reason he has been called the Father of Malay Printing.
