What’s in a name?
A great place to try a popular Gujarati dish Khaman, steamed, light ground chickpea cakes mixed with yogurt. In 1922, food enthusiast, Pitambardas Kanjibhai Thakkar, after working at a Khaman shop in another city, came to Ahmedabad to establish his own business. He rented a small space and the rest is history. Pitambardas was lovingly referred to as ‘Das’ and hence the shop got its name.
Our favourites
Das Khaman has earned a reputation for its food far and wide. Today it’s the fourth generation that continues to carry on the living legacy. The basic recipe never changes, but with time they have introduced quite a few innovative dishes. Some of their more popular items are the tam-tam khaman, black pepper khaman and sandwich khaman.
Famous clientele
Located opposite the Ahmedabad Municipal Office, this shop had quite a few customers from that office. Well known Indian politician, Sardar Vallabhai Patel who played an important role in the Indian freedom movement, was a loyal customer of this shop when he was the mayor of town.
