Originally from Persia, it is a cold milk-based drink with layers of syrup, vermicelli and basil seeds, often finished with a topping of ice cream. A perfect cold refreshment in this hot city.
Gandhi drinks
Started in 1920 by Umar Gandhi, the shop originally sold soda. But when in the 1940s his son took over the shop and introduced faluda, this instantly became a hit with the locals. The shop is located just next to Shaukat Maidan where many prominent Indian leaders gave speeches during the freedom movement. People like Mahatma Gandhi, Muhammed Ali Jinnah, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, all had a faluda from here; hence the name.

Faluda has plenty of health benefits: rose syrup, for a cooling effect on the body, saffron syrup to fight depression, asthma and even cough and basil seeds for a soothing effect on the stomach. Not convinced? They also have good juices, milkshakes, buttermilk, thandai (a cold milk based with dry fruits, nuts and seeds), shrikhand (a traditional Indian sweet dish made out of curd mixed with saffron and cardamom), fruit salads and of course lassi, our favourite yoghurt drink.
