Atmosphere and ambience
Monsoon is arguably one of Yangon’s best-known restaurants. Set in a traditional shop house with slow moving fans hanging from the high ceilings, the place oozes colonial charm and serves authentic food from all across South East Asia. The food is great, they have Myanmar beer on draft, a good selection of Mandalay rum, lots of lovely fresh juices (apple cleanser or papaya lassi anyone?) and an appealing cocktail menu. No wonder it is a firm favourite with locals as well as a popular tourist joint. Monsoon is always busy, so do book ahead.
Our pick
We love the appetizers and salads at Monsoon! They have some surprising flavour combinations on the menu. Try the Kayantee Thoke (grilled smoked eggplant with shrimps) Tofu Thoke (yellow tofu with tamarind sauce) or Ginn Thoke (shredded ginger with shrimps, peanuts and sesame). Don’t miss out a Mandalay Rum, still distilled, blended and bottled in the former capital! (5,000 Kyat).
Nice to know
Check out the photos on the wall of the exhibition named “Smiles from the golden land”. They also have postcards available. (10,000 Kyat each)
