Historic venue and heart of Butterworth

The heart of Butterworth

At the heart of Butterworth is the majestic city reception hall Dewan Dato Haji Ahmad Badawi and in front of it is a large open field, a place for concerts, rallies and other major events. “This field is very special place to the community. We watch major matches here, people play football and exercise” says local resident Ian Tan.

Historic venue

In the old days it was known as the British Recreation Club, but ironically it became the venue of nationalist rallies leading up to independence in 1957. This was where Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first prime minister of Malaysia delivered his first independence march speech. Even today, Penang government organises its state-level Independence Day celebrations here with a grand parade.
