Friendly local mosque amidst Buddhist temples
- Hlaing River Road, Insein
- Open daily but might be closed after prayer.
Sunni Muslims
This Sunni mosque was constructed by K. Vellayan Rowther around 1880, and renovated in 1996. The Muslim population in Yangon is mainly Sunni, but throughout the country, you find a diverse mix: they are descendants of Arabs, Persians, Turks, Moors, Indian Muslims, Sheikhs, Pakistanis, Bengalis and Chinese Muslims who settled and intermarried with local Burmese and many ethnic Myanmar groups.
Earthquake warning!
Within the mosque there is a small basin where men wash their feet and hands before prayer. It is also the swimming pool for some large carps. It is said that two or three days before an earthquake occurs in any part of the country, the fish jump out of the water.
Good to know
This is a Sunni mosque, so only men are allowed into the inner prayer room.
