A small scenic monastery with a mixture of architectural styles
This monastery compound is over 124 years old. We love the yellow building with red plasterwork in the centre of the compound, but the origins of this stunning property remain a mystery. It is the mint green building though, that is the oldest on the compound. It is the thane where young boys and men become monks. It is the most sacred site in a monastery and women are not allowed to enter.
Soe Myat Thuzar Myanmar’s top-earning movie actress in 2008, donated to the restoration of this monastery after Cyclone Nargis. She is locally known as the ‘princess of ads’ for her ubiquitous billboard and full-page magazine advertisements all over town. She is one of four sisters, all famous performers in Myanmar.
