Merchant’s mansion
This handsome coral corner mansion belonged to a leader of the local Moor society in the Dutch days. The coral walls, huge doors and window frames make it a one of Peddlar Street’s most eye-catching historic buildings. Originally it only faced Peddlar Street but later the Church Street part was also added.

Office, school, bank and printing company
In 19th century it became the office of mess messengers’ company which worked with shipping lines. Then it became the country’s first Mahinda College, the famous institution of higher Buddhist learning. Later, for a brief period, it was a branch of the Bank of Ceylon until it became a printing company. Known throughout Fort for using wooden printing blocks and wrought iron printing machines made in Leeds and London to print beautiful stationery and cards, something they continued doing until 2002. Now it’s a hotel, but the printing machines are still there telling the story of the past.
