A history in groceries
Amidst the many goods at Glodok market, this store is where you can find all ingredients you'll need to cook up Chinese-Indonesian dishes. This thriving Chinese grocery store, Tjang Thjang Sen, has been around for over a century and has always been a firm favourite among locals.
4th generation family business
Owner Tjang Sung Thao took over the shop from his father in 1993. He is the fourth generation to carry forward the family business. Little has changed here over the years: Tjang still uses an abacus to calculate transactions and keeps a small archive of newspaper clippings and old photographs in the back office. Traditional ways are valued here, and so are the loyal staff members; some have been around for more than 40 years! When his story is not as busy, Tjang likes to relax behind his table and stare at his colourful goods.
A pork lovers' haven
Pork luncheon is what this shop is famous for since it's a rarity in a country where most food is halal. Foodies from all over town come to Glodok to stock up on pork, which you find in various Indonesian dishes, like nasi campur babi (pork mixed rice) and sate babi (pork satay).
