Sunda Kelapa harbour
Already in the 12th century, Sunda Kelapa was a busy trading port. Ships came here from all over Asia for pepper, the main spice produce of the Sunda Kingdom. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to arrive in 1522. They quickly realised the economic potential of this strategic location and with that history changed forever.
Walk the plank..
Sunda Kelapa is a working port. The quays are lined with traditional wooden sailing boats, the Pinisi ships that bring logs, rattan and other construction materials to Jakarta from all over Indonesia, with their colourful painted hulls are a magnificent sight and the workman may allow you to ‘walk the plank’ and get on board of one of these huge vessels.
