In 1807, William Farquhar was instructed to destroy the fortress in Melaka. Abdullah recorded this event and the sufferings which it caused. Although Abdullah was in his early teens, the event never left his memory. Decades later Abdullah told the world about it. The original orders from the Penang Government had included demolition of the town and evacuation of the settlement. Fortunately, on Raffle’s recommendation, the second plan was never carried out.
