By the time he was eleven years old, Abdullah was earning money by writing Quranic texts and teaching language to soldiers of the Indian garrison stationed in the Fort, the majority of whom were Muslims. The soldiers called him “munshi” (a teacher of language), a title which stuck to him for rest of his life, and by which he is known to posterity. When Stamford Raffles came to Melaka for the third time, as an agent to Lord Minto, he hired Abdullah as a scribbler who during that time was still in his early teens.
