A master calligrapher and signboardmaker
Master calligrapher’s heritage
Prominently in the State Theatre Shopping Arcade, is a large signboard reading “真體字”, meaning “Traditional Chinese characters”.There you will find Mr Chang’s calligraphy shop.Self-taught artist Chang has a deep love for the craft and he credits his strong skills to his lineage - “I am the 17th or 18th generation disciple of the great master calligrapher Yan Zhengqing”.
The art of signboard writing
Back in the days, signboards were written mostly by hand and Chang’s calligraphy work was sought after by restaurants and shop owners. At its peak, he had three branches with nearly 30 assistants and Chang himself lived in a 1,000 sqft luxury property. His skill may be less fashionable these days but Chang’s enthusiasm for calligraphy has not changed.
