Famous amusement park
This housing estate was once a famous Luna Park. Back in the days, Hong Kong had five major theme parks, and this was one of the biggest. Built in 1918, modelled after Shanghai’s Big World Amusement Arcade, the park featured a big merry-go-round, a zoo, and even a Cantonese theatre and dance hall. The entrance was at the busy King’s Road and the visitors came by tram. During the annual dragon boat festival, the park would draw thousands of visitors on a single day to watch the spectacle.
What’s in a name?
When the Lee Gardens opened in Causeway Bay in 1929, Luna Park got out of fashion and the park was rented to a film company as a movie set. After the war, the whole site was turned into a residential estate. The only thing that remains now are the names: Ming Yuen West Street and Ming Yuen Mansion.
