Keeping the spirit of Cantonese opera alive

A revolutionary cinema

The Sunbeam Theatre is one of the neighbourhood’s most important landmarks. Today, its synonymous with Cantonese opera, but when it first opened in 1972, it was a movie theatre. Those were the days of the Cultural Revolution in China and the first film that was screened here was "Unearthed Cultural Relics!"

Coliseum of Cantonese Opera

In the 1980s, under guidance of the United Arts Company, SunBeam became popular among Cantonese opera groups.Many famous stars such as Joyce Koi Ming Fai, performed here at the “Coliseum of Cantonese Opera".

It opened in the days of the Cultural Revolution in China and the first film that was screened here was "Unearthed Cultural Relics"!

UNESCO listed cultural heritage

Cantonese opera is still hugely popular in Hong Kong and even listed as intangible heritage by UNESCO, but still it was difficult for Sunbeam Theatre run as a successful business. When the theatre was faced with closure 2012, local businessman Mr. Li Kui Ming came to the rescue, he refurbished the theatre to support Cantonese culture.
