Village temple
This looks like a small temple, but is actually part of a unique complex of four temples. Built by Nyuh Kuning families over the years it is used for community celebrations and purification rituals.
Healing oil
About a year ago, suddenly a thin layer of oil appeared on the statue of the god Dewi in the Beji Temple. This was something the village had never seen before. Taking this as a spiritual gesture to protect the village, today, the temple priest carefully removes the oil off of Dewi’s face, and mixes it with coconut oil to use for healing ailing villagers.
We can cook the rice but we can’t make it. This is a way to say thank and sorry if we do something wrong, to the natural world.

Everyday Hindus offer a bit of what they cook for both the low spirits (on the ground) and high (in the shrines) because as the former bendesa (spiritual leader) Made says: “We can cook the rice but we can’t make it. It is a way to say thank and sorry if we do something wrong, to the natural world”.
