Celebrating harmony
Subak is at the basis of Bali’s green and lush landscape, a unique administrative and spiritual system to manage rice fields. Life in the subak revolves around the pura, a temple specially built by farmers to worship the Goddess Sri.
Spiritual water management
Indigenous leaders (Kelian) manage the water allocation among the rice paddies. The uniqueness of the system is that it is not based on maximum efficiency but on the principle Tri Hati Karana, a harmonious relationship between people, god and their environment.
Temple of a dying subak
In this subak the rice fields don’t exist anymore, but the subak temple still survives and even today the village families continue to come for ceremonies and rituals.
