Guangzhou 广州市 Old Sai Kwan 老西關
Before becoming an international metropolis, Guangzhou was a city dotted with Kee-lau (shophouses), famous throughout the country. From 1818 to 1931, Guangzhou boasted the largest number of Kee-lau buildings in China. One hundred years ago, Guangzhou's government carried out a great and mighty movement to tear down the city wall and build roads. Over the course of several decades, dozens of kilometres of arcade streets were built. However, after 1932, many arcade buildings have been demolished and replaced by modern architecture. Today, the few Kee-lau that have escaped destruction are used as movie sets for many famous local TV dramas. Kee-lau have become a testament to the local can-do spirit and close-knit community. Exploring Old Sai Kwan is a journey past the city's many original Kee-lau and Sai Kwan Houses, as well as an introduction to its food culture concentrated in Liwan District and Yuexiu District.
