Hong Kong’s most famous bakery
Not only the French are proud of their bakeries, so are the Hongkongers. Founded in 1926, the Garden Company is a homegrown bakery. Every Hongkonger will instantly recognise the blue-white checker packaging of Garden’s Life Bread. Look around and you will see Garden’s logo everywhere, even in McDonald’s, where Garden supplies bread for their hamburgers!
What’s in a name?
Legend has it that the two Garden founders discussed their bakery business plan for the first time in the Hong Kong Botanical Gardens. So picking a name for their first shop was easy. Interestingly, they did not translate the word ‘Garden’ into Cantonese ‘but the English pronunciation ‘Gar-don’嘉頓.
Garden Bakery’s future
The Garden headquarters you are now looking at, were built in 1938. But not for much longer. This piece of collective memory - that is even a listed historic building - will be taken down to be replaced by 25-storey commercial building. Visit their restaurant at the top floor before it’s too late!
The Future of Gatton?
The owner of the Garden filed a redevelopment application with the city planning commission in 2018, meaning that the 80-year-old, Grade II listed bakery will be in danger of being demolished and converted into a 25-story commercial building.
