Slave Island has lived so many lives. The former slave prison, military station and botanical garden has grown into what it is today, a Vibrant Multicultural Community where African, Indian, Javanese, Burgher, Moor and most prominently Malay heritage are visible at every street corner. You can hear it in the music, see it in the colours and taste it in the food. No longer an island in crocodile-infested waters, it is a unique slice of Colombo. But it may not be there much longer. The whole quarter is under threat of demolition, and is being swallowed up by the skyscrapers rising around it. Slave island is about to undergo another reincarnation.
Happy New Year to our friends in Sri Lanka🎉 🇱🇰
In #Colombo? Go to any of the parks or head to Sea Street in #Pettah, join the party at the two fantastic coloured Hindu kovils and break a coconut, or two 💦
When in #Colombo, the crowded chaotic market bazaar #Pettah is a must-visit. We can’t help but be mesmerized by the skinny guys who make the place tick, the natami’s who literally carry the market’s weight on their narrow shoulders. We went to the Old Town Hall to have a chat with two of these local heroes and looked at the city through their lens. Check out latest blog - link in bio.
