iDrink Kung Lee Sugarcane

Fresh-pressed sugarcane juice in a vintage setting

“Kung Lee’s sugarcane juice is a healthy, naturally sweet drink that takes the edge off a summer afternoon.

Sweet atmosphere

Like Hong Kong itself, old businesses transform themselves every generation, so even a venerable old enterprise is often housed in a setting that is just a few years old. Not so for Kung Lee Sugarcane, which has operated since 1948 in a beautiful historic shophouse on Hollywood Road. This is where they make sugarcane juice the traditional way, by pressing each cane and serving the extracted juice with no additional sugar. It’s a healthy, naturally sweet drink that takes the edge off a summer afternoon.

What to order

Sugar cane pudding (竹蔗糕 HK$14) is a great afternoon snack, but if you’re thirsty, get a cup of sugar cane juice (竹蔗汁 HK$12). You can buy a bottle to take away for HK$33.

Sweet treats HK style

For more old-school sweets, walk down the street to 玉葉甜品 Leaf Dessert, an open-air ‘dai pai dong’ stall that has been serving ‘tong shui’ for around a century. Sweet green bean seaweed soup (HK$13) is the stall’s most famous dish, but if you’re in a savoury mood, the wonton noodles (HK$28) are also renowned.
