Chop it up
No Hong Kong business is complete without a chop, the all-important stamp found on receipts, documents and other official material. A chop is like the corporate equivalent of a signature, and business - and even individuals - will splurge on an elaborate chop hand-carved from stone.
Chop Lane
Man Wan Lane is known as ‘Chop Lane’ because it is lined by market stalls offering hand-made chops, along with namecard printing and other services. Find a chop that catches your eye and you can have it inscribed with your own custom logo. Prices start around HK$80.
What about the future?
These days, digital signatures have reduced the need for physical chops, but as with wristwatches and luxury pens, they are still coveted as status symbols – at least for now.
Secret chop shop
Don’t be fooled by the traditional stamp shop façade – Mrs. Pound is actually a trendy bar and restaurant. Nudge the right chop and a secret door opens, inviting you into a nostalgically-decorated world of cocktails and Southeast Asian fusion food.
