Racing rice cake

Lontong Balap is Surabaya’s signature dish: rice cake, bean sprouts, fried tofu and lento (cassava croquette) served with soup mixed with soya sauce and shrimp paste. The sellers at the corner of Jl. Rajawali across the petrol station are undoubtedly the top vendors in town making this THE place to try this all-time Surabaya favourite.

The dish is famous for its light sweet refreshing soup (you’ll love the hint of the celery) and the fresh crunchiness of the sprouts. The price per portion is Rp. 14.000. Es degan (fresh coconut drink) makes a great complement to this dish (Rp. 7.000).

What’s in a name?

Lontong means rice cake and balap means racing. The dish owns this rather peculiar name to the mobile street vendors 'running around' with two heavy woven baskets hanging from a wooden stick).
