The oldest church in Surabaya

Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk (Church of Our Lady) is the oldest church in Surabaya, but there are few original elements, because the tower and stained-glass windows were destroyed in the Surabaya battle.

The first stone - which you can still see near the main entrance - was laid in 1899 by Pastor J. van Santen SCJ. In those days the church was an imposing building, the tallest structure in town. The neo-gothic style architecture reminds you of a church building in Europe. Indeed, apart from the wood used, the red bricks and other materials were all imported from Holland.

One can only imagine the investment required for shipping and construction… The church records reveal Pastor van Santen’s was a successful fundraiser, collecting donations and government grants and organising lotteries and events.

Have a look inside

Visitors are welcome to go inside the church, no need to make an appointment. It’s not old relics that you come for; besides the wooden ornaments depicting Jesus’ crusade, few decorations are original. But, the eye-catching modern additions make the church relevant for contemporary society. Admire the enormous gong and the lovely Maria grotto in the courtyard! (find the door by taking a left at the altar).
