iEat Resto Kapin

Nasi Goreng Widodo, the most expensive fried rice in the world

Priciest fried rice in the world

This small Cantonese restaurant has forever been known for its shark fin soup. Still, one menu item catapulted the place to fame and had foodies from all over the country flock to Surabaya: Resto Kapin serves the world's most expensive fried rice (nasi goreng).

The dish is called 'nasi goreng Widodo' – after the restaurant’s patron (Widodo) who loves crab and decided Indonesia’s staple dish nasi goreng worthy of a generous helping of delicious crab meat. The small portion (can be shared with 2-3 persons) is Rp. 180.000,- while the big one is Rp 350.000,-. Now compare this to the going street vendor rate in town for a portion of fried rice: Rp. 20.000 – Rp. 60.000…

All in the family

The famous fried rice is what people come for, but this family-run restaurant also offers a variety of good Chinese dishes ranging from Rp. 25.000,- to Rp 100.000,-. From their humble beginning in 1952, Pak Widodo and his family have since expanded and now operate three branches, managed by the 3rd generation.

Budget option

Further down the street is Depot Nasi Campur Pojok Tambak Bayan (Jl. Pasar Besar Wetan No.7). Well known for their legendary nasi campur which is super tasty and more value for money than Nasi Goreng Widodo.
