iSurprise Ghanchi ni Pol

A pol of traders in grains and oils

Because pols are traditionally linked to a trade, not to a social standing, people of various castes and classes live together.

Grains and oil

The pols are organised like guilds: goldsmiths, coppersmiths, textile mill merchants or traders would live together in a cluster. Because they’re traditionally linked to a trade, not to a social standing, people of various castes and classes lived together. Often, the pol would be named after the occupation of its residents. ‘Ghanchi ni Pol’, is for the ‘ghanchi’ or those in the business of oil and grains.

Community based living

Although today very few of the original residents remain, residential, religious and occupational spheres of life continue to be interwoven in this intimate neighbourhood. While professions and businesses have changed, this part of Ahmedabad city remains authentic and prosperous.
