Community spirit
This small and remote village has a strong sense of community. The volunteer fire brigade was set up after a huge fire 34 years ago, and the Village Association established in the 1950s acts as the villagers’ clubhouse. The annual Lo Pan Festival is the highlight of the year. It is when the villagers come together to worship, celebrate and give out free meals. “stewed pork with pickled vegetables is the kaifongs’ favourite” says head of the village association.
Village zoo
Mr. Siu, Hong Kong’s one and only animal trainer grew up here in Cha Kwo Ling Village. When he was young the village was like a zoo, he kept all sorts of animals here: leopards, bears, monkeys, penguins and even fur seals.
