Trincomalee ත්‍රිකුණාමලය Lover's Leap; a romantic trail across Fort Frederick

Once upon a time, Francina the daughter of a Dutch army commander fell in love with Nicholas, a Dutch soldier. Their passionate affair didn't last. He got cold feet and one day he suddenly broke the engagement to go back to his homeland of Holland. When the young Francina saw her love sail out of Trinco harbour beyond the horizon, she was so heartbroken, that she jumped off a cliff to the treacherous sea below – a sheer drop of 400 feet.. This is their story. In this trail, we follow Nicholas' footsteps as many years later he returns to the Fort, learns of her death and revisits places that held fond memories for them.

Sri Lanka and the Netherlands have a long-standing history. Through this project, we highlight the many marks of a rich past that survived into the present; structures, people, livelihoods, food and the stories that embody the spirit of this place. Unravelling history through the lens of youth is more than just a reminder of our rich heritage, but a vision for the future of Trincomalee.
